History

Kelaros Valthorth was born into an ordinary household of traders as the first child. He was brought up with firm lessons in obligations and duties to the family as the oldest child, and at the age of five, his mother gave birth to a pair of twins – a boy and a girl – and Kelaros became the unofficial caretaker of Rothros and Sedria as he grew older.

At the age of ten, the town was invaded and ravaged by rouge soldiers and the children were separated from their parents, lost in the panic and chaos around them. Kelaros dragged his young siblings deep into the forest to hide from the band of cutthroats in a bid for safety. Chancing upon a well-hidden cave that led to a small clearing, they decided to hide there and wait out the bandits, with the thought that adults would soon come finding for them and reunite them with their parents.

They waited and waited, and painstakingly, a month passed. The three children were badly malnutritioned and weak, barely surviving off scarce fish they manage to catch from the stream in the clearing, and wildberries that had more than once, gave them some bad runs. They had survived the month by extreme luck, and only luck.

Tired, weak and demoralised, it wasn’t long before Kelaros got into an argument with the demanding 5 year olds while they were out foraging the forest for wild fruits. Storming off in anger, Kelaros left his two siblings at the site and ventured deeper into the forest. After an hour, Kelaros turned back to where he left them, now cooled off and regretful, only to find that the twins were not where he had left them. With growing worry, he frantically searched the area, running to areas he had brought and pointed out to his little siblings, calling out for them and hoping in vain that they would have returned to such places.

Anguished and depressed, he headed towards the clearing, but starts to realise that he’s being followed, and panicked – he began running. Realising that it’s cover has been blown, the predator pounced out of its’ hiding place and gave chase. Dodging and making wild turns, Kelaros managed to escape the most fatal lunges, but did not come out unscathed. Finally bursting through the bushes, the predator slammed into him and sent them both smashing brutally into a rock before careening over the cliff. Thrown apart from the force, Kelaros attempted to flap his weak wings, but to his horror, pain ripped through him, and he realised he had badly damaged the wing when they had crashed into the rock, and he blacked out before he even touched the ground.

Upon waking up, Kelaros finds himself in a moving caravan and his wounds treated, but still too much pain and too weak to attempt much movement. He was informed by his rescuers – a nomadic clan (and unknown to Kel then, "occasional bandits") – had found him miraculously alive at the bottom of the cliff, and he had been out for a week. He drifted back to unconsciousness, and the caravan continued its journey away from his home…

Kelaros was adopted into the clan and was brought up according to the clan’s ways, and they trained him as one of their warriors, imparting to him knowledge on wielding two special weapons simultaneously with fatal precision. His skill in them soon gained name within the clans and at the age of 20, Kelaros finally left the clan, wanting to see what he may find in the world that took away his blood family from him.

His first meeting with outsiders did not go well, and though successful in defeating his opponents, Kelaros was not unharmed. Taking shelter by a waterfall to treat his wounds as his vision blurred in and out in pain, he was stumbled upon by a Pegasus, whom he later learns is called Eridian. He was treated back to health by Eridian, and during that time, Kelaros had slowly warmed up to Eridian. Kelaros, to return the favour granted, helped Eridian build a house, and they became close friends by the time Kelaros decided it was time for him to leave, and did so with Eridian’s promise that Kelaros would always have a home to come back to at the house.

Kelaros comes to a highly secluded and powerful clan, and by luck and coincidence, he finds himself protecting the clan’s heir and a lady from their would be assassins. Delighted at meeting an outsider, the heir, Velrion, brought Kelaros back to the “palace” and enrolled him in the elitist academy that in essence, was to train Kelaros into a permanent fixture of the royal guard. Kelaros decided to stick around for a few days to get a feel of the rarely seen place before continuing on his travels, but to his dismay, Velrion had anticipated this and had hidden one of Kelaros’ weapon – a blade forged of his own scales and blood. Furious, Kelaros was ready to cause harm, but stopped when the Lady Arian, threw herself at him and pleaded him to forgive them and to stay to regale them with tales from the outside world. With both Velrion and Arian’s effort, Kelaros was finally defeated and promised to stay for a while more. A month became two, and a year became three.

Now 23 and “graduated” from the academy for a year, Kelaros is constantly in the presence of either Velrion or Arian (or both), and they had formed a tight trinity. Velrion, 4 years older than Kelaros, finds himself taking over the clan prematurely as they find his father poisoned in his study, and Kelaros was inducted as an official general. A year later, Velrion and Arian, under pressure from expectations, wedded with the full blessings from Kelaros.

Kelaros meets a steadily rising politician, a shrewd scientist with an intriguing character that has a startling resemblance to Kelaros himself. Kelaros takes the scientist under his wing, and his suspicions were later confirmed – the scientist was Rothros, his long lost brother. Overjoyed that they are finally reunited, Kelaros fails to notice that Rothros had grown up bitter and angry, and was incensed by the fact that Kelaros had had a better life than him and his twin, seeing Kelaros for someone who had abandoned them both for pulling him down, and continued on to having a better life. It wasn’t long before accidental deaths and a mysterious illness spreads in the castle, and Kelaros stumbles upon a conversation between his siblings that confirmed his growing suspicion. When confronted, Rothros turned on him with harsh accusations of abandonment and their grievances that Kelaros had no idea of. Shaken and torn between his neglected duty as a brother and lessons of honour.

When day broke, he finds his brother poisoned, and the only antidote would require an fresh ingredient that came from across the land. Conflicted as he was, he decided to go forth and obtain the plant as his last duty to his family to atone for his sins. Before he left, the king stopped him privately, and placed a cloak onto K made of the king’s flight feathers, and some of Arians’s fur, that molts every few years, with the words “Arian and I are mere birds in this gilded cage. We cannot keep you here forever with us. Soar and run with us on your back.” And sent him off with the stolen blade from many years back, though Kelaros promises to be back soon.

Travelling with little rest, Kelaros has much time to meditate on the problem at hand, and he finally came to the decision that his brother had to die, and he wept at this decision. He purposefully held back from going straight back to the capital with the plant for two weeks. On reaching the town between the capital and the mountains, he hears of the news of the usurpation – that the royal family was wiped out.

Upon arriving back, he notices a large change in the atmosphere. He was found by a fellow general on his way to the royal wing who updated him on the situation. A week after he left, Rothros recovered (he apparently poisoned himself and already had the antidote), and swiftly executed all clan royalty and threatened the kingdom with the unknown illness he created.

Unable to take such betrayal and witness the death of the kingdom that the two people he cared for so dearly had wanted to continue cultivating, Kelaros finally confronted Rothros after witnessing his cruelties for a week. They battled and Kelaros won, but not without cost. He lost his dominant left arm and overused his magic and was starting to enter into a magic overuse induced coma. Before he was completely lost to the conscious world, he sees his sister swearing that she would tear his world apart as he did hers.

When Kelaros next awoke, the city was well into repairs and a new Regent had been selected. With some backing from the council, the Regent exiled Kelaros according to the laws of the clan, and his parting words were: “There is something about you that brings out the worst in man. The path you thread on is one of death, and you carry this scent around with you, cursing the land you thread upon, and the hands you touch. I thank you for bringing joy to Velrion and Arian’s lives, but I will forever curse you for our loss. It was an honour working beside you, Kelaros Valthorth. May the Gods walk with you.”

Kelaros now journeys the land to search for his sister to complete his last duty, living as a mercenary, unwilling to pledge himself to an army.

He fights with a whip-like sword, fully utilising his armoured wings and tail as well to make up for the lack of his dominant arm.
